Breezy Hill Update 41711

Posted 4/17/2011 10:05pm by Art Ozias.
  • Just finished a book by Francis Thicke, http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/0979210402/ref=sr_1_1_olp?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1303091115&sr=1-1&condition=used.  After reading this book you will understand why he was not elected in Iowa for the head of the their department of agriculture.  I'm sure the Farm Bureau and all other Ag groups made sure he was defeated.  He is too smart and has too much common sense.
  • Last week I had a link for Nina Planck's book.  Did you "look inside".  Be sure to check the table of contents and surely you'll want to get this book for your library.  Here it is again, http://www.amazon.com/Real-Food-What-Eat-Why/dp/1596913428/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1303091467&sr=1-1.
  • Still have lard for sale.  If you are in doubt as to the value of using lard, I have an excellent reprint.  Perhaps I can figure out how to scan it and make it available electronically.
  • We lost one of our milk customers.  They are moving to Va and will be apprenticing with Joel Salatin.  What a wonderful experience for them.  They will learn more in one year working with Joel than they could at any four years in a "modern" AG school.
  • Have taken several orders for beef for this grazing season.  I only have seven beeves for this year.  Remember, when they are gone, that's it.
  • Chicken orders are still coming in.  Our first chicken day will be in mid to late May.
  • Our little incubator is full of eggs from our Red Bro or Poulet Rouge chickens.  Hopefully, we'll have a good hatch like last year.
  • We have provided Guinea eggs and some of our regular eggs to people wanting to hatch their own.   With the price of day old chicks continuing to escalate it may be time for more people to invest in an incubator.
  • We had some of our "dirt" hog pork chops for dinner today.  Our son commented on how great they tasted.  He had gone to the Corner Cafe in the city before going to a Royals baseball game and was not impressed with their biscuits and gravy.  Biscuits were OK.  Had to scrape off the gravy and add apple butter.  He said  his omelett was so so.  He said the place was packed on a Sat. morning.  It's a shame that most people don't know what food should/used  to taste like.  I thought to myself, I'm glad he learned what food should taste like growing up with Mom's cooking.
  • I started the list for turkeys.  The Caddell's want two of them.

There’s not much you can do about the cost of food, just be aware that the packaging experts are at it again.  http://www.naturalnews.com/031897_food_inflation_packaging.html

More on Joel Salatin.  Be sure and take the time to listen to his lecture.  I wonder if there is anyone in our government listening?  I think most are at a fund raiser somewhere in corporate America.  http://www.yesmagazine.org/issues/can-animals-save-us/why-changing-the-food-system-is-up-to-you?utm_source=marapr11&utm_medium=yesemail&utm_content=subs&utm_campaign=Salatin

This from the American Grassfed Association.

Top Ten Reasons to Eat Grassfed Beef

According to a 2009 study that was a joint effort between the USDA and researchers at Clemson University in South Carolina, grassfed beef is better for human health than grainfed beef in these top ten ways:

  1. Lower in total fat
  2. Higher in beta-carotene
  3. Higher in vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol)
  4. Higher in the B-vitamins thiamin and riboflavin
  5. Higher in the minerals calcium, magnesium, and potassium
  6. Higher in total omega-3s
  7. Better ratio of omega-6 to 3 fatty acids (1.65 vs 4.84)
  8. Higher in CLA (cis-9 trans-11), a potential cancer fighter
  9. Higher in vaccenic acid (which can be transformed into CLA)

10. Lower in the saturated fats linked with heart disease

A little history lesson from David Korten.  He is the author of the book, Agenda for a New Economy.  After watching Inside Job, this showed up on the Yes magazines top picks of the week.  Coincidence?   http://www.yesmagazine.org/blogs/david-korten/the-end-of-empire?utm_source=wkly20110401&utm_medium=yesemail&utm_campaign=titleKorten

We’ve including similar articles on microwave cooking.  Here is another.  You  should do your own research and you be the judge,   http://www.naturalnews.com/031929_microwaved_water_plants.html

that's it from the hill for this week.  Art and Debra
